There are many temples where you can experience shakyo (sutra copying), so we’ll introduce some of them.
It’s a great way to spend a relaxing time in between sightseeing.

Sanzen-in, Ohara, Kyoto

Sanzen-in is a Tendai sect temple located in Ohara, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto. Also called Sanzen-in Monzeki, its mountain name is Gyozan, and its principal image is Yakushi Nyorai. Founded by Saicho, it is located in the Ohara area, once known as a retreat for aristocrats and Buddhist practitioners. Together with Shoren-in and Myoho-in, it is counted among the three Monzeki temples of the Tendai sect.

Daikaku-ji Monzeki (Old Saga Imperial Villa)

Daikaku-ji is the head temple of the Shingon sect Daikaku-ji school, located in Saga, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto. Its mountain name is Saga-san, principal image Fudo Myo-o and the founder is Emperor Saga. Originally the emperor’s villa, it has strong imperial ties and historical significance in Japanese politics. The temple also preserves the Saga Go-ryu school of flower arrangement, originating with Emperor Saga. Due to proximity to Uzumasa, a hub for period drama filming, the temple grounds are often used for film and TV shoots.

Tenryu-ji

Tenryu-ji, in Saga Tenryu-ji, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto, is the head temple of the Rinzai Tenryu-ji school. Its mountain name is Reigizan, founded by Ashikaga Takauji and first abbot Muso Soseki. The principal image is Shakyamuni. As a Zen temple tied to the Ashikaga shogunate and Emperor Kanmu, it has been ranked first among the Kyoto Five Mountains. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.”
