HOUSHOSHI

Hosho Paper: A Prestigious Japanese Washi for Rituals, Certificates, and Official Documents

In Japan, hosho paper has been used for important and official documents for centuries. Its origins date back to the Muromachi period, when it was used for shogunate orders known as “hosho,” which later became the name of the paper itself.

Even today, hosho is regarded as a special type of Japanese washi used for conveying formal or meaningful messages. It is widely used for congratulatory and condolence letters, backing Japanese paintings and woodblock prints, ceremonial gift wrapping, engagement gifts, decorative envelopes, certificates, and more.

Thick, Flexible, and Durable Hosho Paper

Compared with other Japanese papers such as hanshi, hosho paper is thicker, highly flexible, and extremely durable. Traditional hosho is made primarily from long, strong kozo (mulberry) fibers, giving it exceptional resilience and a beautiful natural texture. Recently, variations made with pulp have also become available for more accessible everyday use.

Uses for Hosho Paper

Hosho paper has traditionally been used to carry important messages. It is commonly used for celebratory and condolence writing, as well as for wrapping gifts and money envelopes.

Other uses include backing for Japanese paintings, ukiyo-e woodblock prints, betrothal gift wrapping, ceremonial envelopes, memo papers, certificates, and even temple stamp books. High-grade hosho is particularly valued for fine art purposes. Please select the size and type best suited to your intended use.

Front and Back of Hosho Paper

Like all traditional washi, hosho paper has a front and a back. The smooth side is considered the “front,” while the rougher side is the “back.” You may write on either side.

Using a brush on the smooth side reduces ink bleeding and provides cleaner strokes. Writing on the rough side produces more bleeding and texture, adding a distinctly natural washi character. Please choose according to your preference and artistic style.

Hosho Paper Can Also Be Printed On

Hosho paper is suitable not only for brush writing but also for printing. Both sides can be used for printing, and printing on the rough side emphasizes the unique texture and warmth of Japanese washi.
