Choose Shikishi to Match Your Work

Shikishi are square boards of thick paper used for writing waka, haiku, calligraphy, or paintings.
At Shoyu, we offer a wide variety of shikishi for calligraphy. The standard size for large shikishi is 24.2×27.3cm.
The type of gasen paper applied to the surface affects the degree of ink bleeding and the writing feel.
Shikishi with gasen paper allow ink to penetrate easily, making them ideal for large characters, while shikishi with torinoko paper are recommended for those writing small characters.
Practice pads or shikishi-sen are paper sheets without the thick board backing, making them useful for shikishi practice.
