Seal Measuring Tool

Collection: Seal Measuring Tool

A Handy Tool for Stamping with Confidence

The position where you stamp your seal on a work is something many artists value greatly.
However, stamping straight on a large piece can be quite difficult.
The ink ruler (Inku) is a very useful tool that helps you stamp exactly where you want.

How to Use the Ink Ruler

1. First, decide the stamping position by using a paper cutout (In’ei) made from a previously stamped impression.
2. Next, place the ink ruler in a "T" shape on your work, aligning the 90-degree angle with the corner of the seal impression to fix its position.
3. Hold the ink ruler firmly with your left hand so it doesn’t move, then press the seal with your right hand, guiding it along the ruler.
If the impression is faint, you can reapply ink and stamp again in the same spot without moving the ruler. Be careful, as a double stamp becomes difficult if the ruler isn’t fixed securely.

Front and Back of the Ink Ruler

Some ink rulers have a beveled side and a flat side.
Use the beveled side against the artwork.
This design prevents the seal paste on the stamp from smearing onto the work when the ruler comes into contact.

Shapes and Materials of Ink Rulers

Ink rulers come in T-shape and L-shape varieties; choose whichever is easier for you to use. There are also sliding types available.
As for materials, they are usually made from woods such as ebony.
