Collection: Seal Measuring Tool (Inku / Alignment Tool)
A Precision Tool for Accurate Seal Placement
The placement of a seal impression is a critical element in calligraphy and seal engraving.
However, stamping a seal straight and accurately on a large work can be challenging.
The ink ruler (Inku) is a specialized tool designed to help you stamp your seal precisely where you intend, with confidence and consistency.
How to Use the Ink Ruler
1. First, determine the seal position using an In’ei, a paper cutout made from a previously stamped seal impression.
2. Place the ink ruler on the artwork in a T-shape, aligning the 90-degree corner with the edge of the seal impression to lock the position.
3. Hold the ink ruler firmly with your left hand to prevent movement, then press the seal with your right hand while guiding it along the ruler’s edge.
If the impression appears light, you can reapply seal paste and stamp again in the exact same position, as long as the ruler remains fixed.
Front and Back of the Ink Ruler
Some ink rulers feature a beveled side and a flat side.
Always place the beveled side against the artwork.
This design prevents excess seal paste from smearing onto the paper when the ruler contacts the surface.
Ink Ruler Shapes and Materials
Ink rulers are available in T-shape and L-shape designs; choose the type that best suits your working style. Sliding models are also available.
Most ink rulers are crafted from durable woods such as ebony, offering stability, weight, and long-term usability.
