Collection: Tanzaku Hanger

Enjoying Haiku and Tanka with Tanzaku

The Japanese people have long had a history of appreciating waka and tanka poetry.
Even today, tanka and haiku are composed and enjoyed.
Here we introduce display accessories for tanzaku, allowing you to easily showcase your composed works.

What are Tanka and Haiku?

In Japan, there has been a custom of composing and enjoying waka since ancient times.
In a sense, it served as a communication tool, much like email in the modern era.
Tanka is a type of waka expressed in the structure of “5-7-5-7-7” syllables.
In contrast, haiku is composed in “5-7-5” syllables.
Haiku must always include a seasonal word (*kigo*), so they are mostly written with themes of nature or the seasons.
Within these short verses, the uniquely Japanese sense of *wabi-sabi* is often conveyed,
and not only direct expressions but also the skill to interpret hidden meanings is required.

Choosing According to Tanzaku Size

There are two sizes of tanzaku for enjoying tanka and haiku.
The standard width type (about 6 cm wide) and the slightly larger wide type (about 7.5 cm wide).
Tanzaku holders are available in both “standard/wide dual use” and “wide only” types to match the width of the tanzaku,
so please select the best display option according to the size.
