Choose a Calligraphy Mat That Matches Your Work
The full sheet size (Zenshi) is one of the most fundamental formats in calligraphy and is another name for shishaku gasen (four-shaku paper).
It is also known as “Shōgasen” or “Yonshaku-mono.”
“Ren-ochi” refers to paper cut to three-quarters of a full sheet (approximately 53 × 136 cm).
When writing on full sheets or Ren-ochi paper, use a full-sheet mat (approximately 90 × 150 cm), which is suitable for both formats.
Felt and Lasha Types
Each of the two main materials has its own characteristics.
Choose according to your preferred thickness and texture.
Felt mats are known for their luxurious feel and thickness.
They are made by compressing animal hair fibers and are valued for their softness and excellent water repellency.
Lasha mats are more affordable and are made from durable woven fabric.
They resist wrinkles and can be folded, carried, and washed, making them practical for everyday use.
