Japanese Funeral Etiquette

In Japan, customs surrounding gift-giving have long been valued, and even today, though simplified, they are still practiced in daily life.
Condolence noshi envelopes are used for funerals and memorial services in general.
As a matter of courtesy, it is always good to be mindful of proper etiquette when giving such offerings.

How to Choose Correctly

Since condolence noshi envelopes are used for mourning, the “musubi-kiri” knot, which symbolizes something happening only once, is chosen.
In general, condolence envelopes are tied with black and white cords.
Depending on the region, customs may differ slightly—for example, in the Kansai area, yellow and white cords are often used.
If you are unsure, it may be best to ask someone familiar with the local customs.
