Ink Grinding Machine

Collection: Ink Grinding Machine

Using the Tools of Modern Technology

When creating large works such as scroll-sized pieces for calligraphy exhibitions, a large amount of ink is required. At such times, an ink grinding machine is recommended.
By using solid ink, you can achieve the desired ink color and bleeding effects, while also being very economical. Today, these machines are widely used among professional calligraphers and students of calligraphy.
At Shoyu, we carry ink grinding machines from Bokuundo, Kuretake, and Kobaien.
We also provide guidance on how to choose an ink grinding machine, so please have a look.

Recommended Ink Grinding Machines

There are many options, but which one should you choose? What’s the difference? For those wondering, here are some recommended ink grinding machines.

1. For Those Who Want Fine-Particle Ink Quickly

“Ink Grinding Craftsman” by Bokuundo
A single-slot ink grinder for kanji use.
It was once said that ink grinders produced coarse particles, but this has been improved by tilting the inkstone. Since the inkstone surface rotates at an angle, the ink and inkstone come into contact at a point rather than a surface. This concentrates the pressure, working with the fine inkstone surface to grind ink quickly. Because the inkstone surface is angled, the ink does not remain submerged in water, preventing cracking or softening of the ink stick.
The angled ink pool is available in three types: “for Kanji,” “for Kana,” and “Natural Stone,” allowing you to choose based on your purpose.
・For Kanji: Produces about 30–40 ml of ink solution per grind.
Reaches ultra-concentrated ink in about 2 hours.
・For Kana: Produces about 5–15 ml of ink solution per grind.
Reaches ultra-concentrated ink in about 30 minutes.

2. For Those Who Want a Larger Quantity of Fine-Particle Ink

“Super Ink Grinder TK-N Model”
A dual-slot ink grinder that combines craftsmanship with technology!
Produces 60–80 ml of ink solution at one time.
Can use either “ultra-fine artificial inkstone” or “natural stone” ink pools.

3. For Those Who Want Even More Ink

“Ink Grinder Runrun” by Kobaien
A dual-slot ink grinder. With Japanese ink, it produces 180 cc in about 60 minutes.
Capable of producing up to 180 cc of ink solution at once.
The inkstone height is adjustable, allowing three different quantities: about 60 cc / about 100 cc / about 180 cc.
Even if the inkstone surface wears down, it can be restored with a special whetstone on the ceramic plate, allowing continued use.

How to Use an Ink Grinding Machine

Simply set the ink stick and add water to the angled ink pool.
Once finished, dilute the ink solution with water to your preferred consistency.
For best results, grind until the ink solution becomes thick and smooth.
