Ojikishi (large shikishi) are square, thick-backed boards traditionally used for waka, haiku, calligraphy, and painting.

The standard size of ojikishi is 24.2 × 27.3 cm, making it ideal for expressive compositions and balanced layouts.

The writing experience varies depending on the type of paper applied to the surface.
Shikishi finished with gasenshi paper absorb ink well and are suitable for bold, large characters.
Those finished with torinoko paper resist ink bleeding and are recommended for writing smaller, detailed characters.

Practice pads and shikishi-sen are paper-only versions without the thick backing board, making them perfect for practicing before completing a final shikishi work.
