Recommended Calligraphy Sets for Adults

January is a month full of excitement for trying something new. Perhaps this year you want to start calligraphy, practice penmanship to write beautiful letters, or take on a new challenge with brushwork. If you’re considering exploring new aspects of calligraphy, Shoyu is here to help! Our staff at Shoyu Online will guide you through the essential items you need to get started.

Brush

"Unshu Chugo" – This brush is easy to control and has a firm yet soft texture, making it suitable for beginners. It is a versatile size that can write two-character, four-character, or six-character pieces on standard paper sheets.

Ink

"Japanese Made Five-Star Safflower Ink 1.5 Chou" – This ink uses especially fine soot particles, making it perfect not only for Kanji works but also for copying sutras. Having one of these inks on hand is very convenient.

Inkstone

"Kakujo Shihei" – This inkstone is produced in Ogatsu, one of Japan’s most famous inkstone production areas. Its smooth texture and craftsmanship make it ideal for adult calligraphy, different from the ones used in school. The standard size, Shihei (approx. 4–5 sun), is also recommended (price: ¥1,875).

Felt Mat for Standard Paper

The felt mat offers a luxurious and cushioned writing surface. For those who apply heavier pressure, a larger size is recommended. Thickness: 2mm.

Paperweight for Standard Paper (Nickel, Medium)

For writing four-character pieces on standard paper, we recommend the medium-sized paperweight.

Brush Rest

Other useful items: "Angirasu Brush Rest, Medium" – A Mino-yaki ceramic brush rest. This high-quality brush rest adds atmosphere and focus, allowing you to work with motivation and concentration. Suitable for both large and small brushes.

Water Dropper

"Small Oval Water Dropper with Plum Design" – Used for adding water when grinding ink.

It’s a good idea to start with cute and affordable items. If you find starting calligraphy on your own a bit challenging, we recommend visiting a nearby class where you can observe brush techniques.
