Tools Related to Hanging Scrolls

There are various tools used when hanging or storing a kakejiku (hanging scroll).
We will introduce what each tool is for and how to use it. By handling your carefully made kakejiku with care, you can enjoy it for a long time.

Yahazu [Arrow-shaped Hook]

A tool used to hang kakejiku at a high position.
There are various types, including feathered versions.

Fuchin [Paperweight]

A decorative item hung at the end of the scroll. Originally, it was used to stabilize the scroll when it swayed in the wind.
It is recommended to use it only when initially hanging the scroll, as leaving it on continuously can damage the scroll due to its weight.
Materials include ceramic, stone, and metal.

Jizai [Adjustable Hook]

A useful tool for adjusting the height of a kakejiku.
Available in metal or wood.

Bouchuko [Insect-repelling Incense]

When storing kakejiku in paulownia boxes, use insect-repelling incense designed for scrolls.
Camphor or naphthalene can damage the kakejiku.

Mushiboshi [Air-drying]

Kakejiku stored in paulownia boxes should be air-dried once or twice a year on sunny days in spring or autumn, in the shade. This helps remove moisture and prevents insect damage and mold.
