Hand-written wooden tablets from 2,000 years ago are noteworthy for understanding the calligraphy of Han steles. Japanese artists such as Hidai Tenrai, Ueda Sokyu, Teshima Yukei, Matsui Joryu, Nishikawa Yasushi, Aoyama Sugo, and Uno Sesson all learned wooden tablets in their own unique ways and incorporated them into their works. The writing is full of charm, differing from modern expression, with very large characters that sweep to the right and vertical lines that are about five times longer than normal. This book contains a wide variety of content, including new materials excavated in 1993.
