Made with Wagasen (hosho paper), these envelopes are characterized by their pure white color and minimal discoloration. What is hosho paper?
Hosho paper is a thick paper made from kozo.
Its basic structure is the same as kozo paper, but it is made stronger and thicker by adding ingredients such as yellow hollyhock root and white clay.
Echizen hosho paper is famous, and since the Muromachi shogunate used this paper for official documents, it is said to have come to be called "hosho" paper, meaning "orders."
Later, the technique spread throughout the country, and hosho paper began to be produced in various places. Even today, it is primarily used for ceremonies, and is also used for Shinto prayers.
