How to Use Ink Paste (Indei)
Indei (seal paste) is an important item that enhances the beauty of your artwork.
To achieve a satisfactory seal impression, it is essential to learn the proper way to handle indei.
How to Use Indei
This section explains the process from opening the indei package to applying it onto the seal.
Step 0: Opening
When purchased, the indei is flat and solidified.
If it is covered with a plastic film, please remove it.
You can use it as is, but for better adhesion of indei to the seal surface, it is recommended to knead it well with a spatula before use.
If you use it without kneading, only one spot will wear down quickly, making it difficult to apply indei evenly. Moreover, the vermilion and oil may separate, causing uneven or poor impressions.
(How to knead is explained in Step 1.)
Step 1: Mix thoroughly from the bottom with a spatula
Use a spatula to mix the indei thoroughly.
(If several days have passed since the last use, the paste may have hardened and will not adhere evenly to the seal surface. Therefore, this process should be done each time before use.)
The key is to lift and mix it from the bottom thoroughly.
If not stirred well, indei will be picked up only from the same area, resulting in uneven application.
As vermilion and oil—the main components of indei—separate easily, make sure to knead them well to prevent oil separation and spoilage.
Step 2: Form into a ball
After thoroughly kneading, shape the indei into a round ball as shown in the photo.
Forming it into a ball helps apply the paste evenly onto the seal surface.
Step 3: Lightly tap to apply the indei
Apply the indei onto the seal by lightly tapping it.
Be careful not to press it down too hard.
You can move either the indei or the seal itself.
It’s important to check frequently how much paste is applied to the seal surface.
Avoid applying too much or too little.
If too much, the carved lines will fill up, and if too little, the impression will be faint.
Step 4: Use an Injoku-dai and Inku to stamp
Once the indei has been applied, use an injoku-dai (seal mat) and an inku (positioning tool) to press the seal onto paper.
Place the injoku-dai under the paper, and align the inku to the desired stamping position.
After use, mix the indei again before putting it away, close the lid tightly, and store it in the attached wooden box.
Always knead the indei well before each use.
If left unused for a long time, it may dry and harden, or the oil may separate and become sticky.
Even when not in regular use, knead it periodically to maintain quality.
How to Choose the Color of Indei
Indei comes in various colors.
The impression of your artwork will greatly vary depending on the type of seal, color, and placement of the imprint.
■ Komyo — Bright vermilion, suitable for Kana or Kanji works with a gentle impression
■ Senzoku — Brilliant yellowish red, an elegant and versatile tone
■ Birei — A deeper red than Komyo, ideal for calm Kanji works
These examples are general guidelines for Kana or Kanji works, but there are no strict rules.
Choose the color that best fits your artistic style and personal preference.
Units of Weight for Indei
The size (volume) of indei is measured in “ryo,” with one ryo equivalent to 30g.
Shoyu Online offers 1/5 ryo (6g), 1/2 ryo (15g), 2/3 ryo (20g), 1 ryo (30g), 2 ryo (60g), 3 ryo (90g), 5 ryo (150g), and 10 ryo (300g).
If the container is too small, it may be difficult to apply indei properly, so choose a size that suits your seal.
As a reference, for a seal size of 2.0 cm square, a 1/2 ryo (15g) indei is sufficient.
“Shippo Indei” — Free from Harmful Heavy Metals
“Shippo Indei” is an organic seal paste made using both organic and inorganic pigments, entirely free from harmful heavy metals, and produced through traditional methods.
It is an environmentally friendly indei that is safe for both people and the planet.
Using high-quality mugwort fiber and refined oil, it resists hardening and clogging, reducing issues such as drying or oil separation.
Additionally, the subtle scent of sandalwood brings a sense of calm while using it.
