Shimauchi 00:00
Nice to meet you, everyone. I’m Shimauchi, a big fan of calligraphy.
Thank you so much for watching this channel.
What I want to tell you on this channel is: “Calligraphy is super fun! That’s it!”
If you feel it’s fun, you’ll start to love it.
Shimauchi 00:20
When you love it, you’ll want to keep going, and it becomes more interesting.
You’ll want to tell someone about its charm.
If even one more person thinks, “I really love calligraphy,” or “Calligraphy is so much fun,”
I’ll be truly, truly happy.
Shimauchi 00:35
But honestly, what I can do alone is very small.
So please lend me your energy and power, everyone who’s watching.
And please help spread the word that “calligraphy is fun” to many more people.
Shimauchi 00:55
Okay, I’ve been saying “fun” again and again (a little embarrassing!),
so let me talk about what exactly is fun, if that’s okay?
First, being able to write beautiful characters.
When your handwriting is beautiful, I think people around you will take notice.
Shimauchi 01:12
And it becomes a personal strength.
In my life so far, I’ve always felt that way.
I’m glad I had it; it became a strength and a source of confidence.
Shimauchi 01:26
There are so many different genres:
kanji, kana, mixed script, seal carving, practical writing, and more.
There are truly countless genres to explore.
Also, there are tons of tools.
Shimauchi 01:43
Many of you may only know the basic school calligraphy set from elementary school, right?
For me, maybe in junior high or high school,
I was amazed to discover there are specialty stores for calligraphy tools.
When I went, I thought, “What, there are this many tools?!”
Shimauchi 01:59
I was really stunned.
For those who love tools, you’ll think, “I’m obsessed with tools,”
and for calligraphy lovers, “I’m totally into this.” There are lots of us who feel that way.
Another point: there are many ways to express yourself.
Shimauchi 02:16
Do you think calligraphy is only about writing on paper?
The kinds of paper alone are incredibly rich.
And do you know about “calligraphy performance”?
You write with a huge brush on a huge sheet, or write together in a group.
Shimauchi 02:32
There are many truly dynamic ways to engage with it.
I think we’ll also see more fusion of analog and digital from here on.
And calligraphy spans a very wide age range.
Shimauchi 02:47
Really, from children to adults, and even seniors—
it’s something that three generations in a family can enjoy together. That’s rare, isn’t it?
It’s a prime example of lifelong learning.
Shimauchi 03:04
Also, there are so many exhibitions.
There are all kinds of exhibitions out there.
You don’t have to only “do” calligraphy with your hands;
you can also enjoy it by seeing it with your own eyes.
“Seeing once is worth a hundred hearings”—that’s another wonderful way to enjoy calligraphy.
Shimauchi 03:20
So, how about it? Did the fun side of calligraphy come across?
There’s still so much more to share, but through this channel,
I’ll keep working so more people will feel, “Calligraphy is fun,”
and I’d be grateful for your continued support.
Shimauchi 03:38
And if there’s anyone who can “share a little power” with us,
please subscribe and give the video a like. I’d truly appreciate it.
That was a message from a calligraphy lover. Thank you, and see you next time!
