Essential Brushes for a Beautiful Mounting Finish

When you create a calligraphy piece you are truly satisfied with, you naturally want to display it in the best possible condition.
Mounting brushes are essential tools used to apply paste thinly and evenly to the backing paper attached to the reverse side of the artwork.

As ink dries over time, the surface of the paper can develop subtle waves and unevenness. To correct this, a traditional process called ura-uchi (backing) is used.
By placing the artwork onto a larger sheet of paper lightly moistened with a spray bottle, the paper receives just the right amount of moisture, allowing wrinkles to relax and the surface to be smoothed.
Using a mounting brush, excess wrinkles are carefully removed, resulting in a clean, refined, and beautifully finished surface.

Mounting brushes are also indispensable when reinforcing artworks by attaching washi paper to the back with paste.
When held upright, the brush is used for gentle tapping; when laid flat, it smooths the surface with stroking motions.
By applying paste evenly and working with care, you can achieve a professional-quality finish.
