Compared to the refined Ritual Steles and Cao Quan Steles, the Zhang Qian Stele is praised for its simplicity, strength, and rustic charm, and it had a great influence on Qing Dynasty figures such as Yi Bingshou and He Shaoji. Many of the rubbings in circulation have been inked or edited, so caution is required, especially for those with striking black and white and clear character shapes. This book is a compilation of 100 rubbings based on a meticulous rubbing that faithfully conveys the texture of the ancient stone, supplemented in part by other rubbings.
