Calligraphy Classics Series Vol. 14: Zhang Menglong Stele (Tenrai Shoin)
Calligraphy Classics Series Vol. 14: Zhang Menglong Stele (Tenrai Shoin)
This famous stone monument from the Northern Wei period is known for its austere calligraphy style, stern appearance, and meticulous composition. It is a monument in tribute to Zhang Menglong, the prefect of Lu County (Qufu, Shandong Province, China), and still resides in the Confucius Temple in the same county. It has long been highly regarded, and has been praised by many people, including Bao Shichen and Kang Youwei. The four intact characters on the 10th line, "Winter? Summer?", are considered to be old rubbings, but good rubbings are rare, so we have combined the strengths of the Shogakuin copy and others to make it a 100-copy copy. It includes an explanation, a Japanese translation, a modern Japanese translation, character shapes and stroke order, and an introduction to sections suitable for copying.
