Calligraphy Classics Series Vol. 25: “Draft of a Requiem to My Nephew” and Other Works by Yan Zhenqing
Gan Zhenqing (709-785) was a revolutionary calligrapher who brought a breath of fresh air to calligraphy. His calligraphy, which emphasizes the weight and strength of lines, is still fascinating to us today. The three works below are all drafts that Gan Zhenqing left behind while composing his writings. These three representative works are sometimes collectively referred to as the "Three Drafts." Precisely because they are drafts, they exude the flavor of a kuraso (a traditional writing style), and are masterpieces of spontaneous, unpretentious, and cursive calligraphy.
[Manuscripts for a Niece] A memorial to Gan's nephew, Ji Ming, who died in the An Lushan Rebellion. Both the calligraphy style and content are strikingly realistic and moving.
[Draft of the Envoy's Message] A text in memory of his uncle, Yan Yuansun, and the deceased members of his family. The powerful lines resulting from his mature calligraphy are captivating.
[Draft of the Disputed Seating Position] A text protesting the seating order at court. It is said to be Yan Zhenqing's masterpiece.
