Video of Inking New Sakura (Extra Thick) Hanshi Paper
*The ink used in this video is Rin Ink (regular ink), and the brush used is a Shuhitsudo Kochiku brush.
Starting with the basics of stops, strokes, and stroke strokes
Machine-made hanshi paper for school-aged kanji. Because the raw material contains a high amount of pulp, the paper is particularly white and suitable for use as practice paper for schoolchildren. It features minimal bleeding and slight ink penetration. Paper thicknesses are available in "normal thickness," "heavy weight," and "extra thick." The extra thick paper features slight ink penetration and a moderate amount of resistance to the brush. It is widely used for practice in classes and calligraphy schools.
Differences in Expression Depending on Thickness
Normal thickness paper allows the ink to spread easily horizontally, requiring less ink, allowing for lighter brush strokes.
It is also more prone to bleeding than thick paper.
If you want to avoid bleeding, it is best to choose thicker paper.
If you want to minimize bleeding, you can try increasing the ink concentration when writing.
Thick paper allows the ink to penetrate deep into the paper, resulting in less horizontal bleeding and a sense of depth in the ink color.
Thick paper requires a larger amount of ink, and because it produces less bleeding, it's easier to create rubbing effects.
If you don't want rubbing, it's best to choose the standard thickness.
Sakura Hanshi comes in three thicknesses: regular, heavy, and extra heavy. We encourage you to try them out and compare them to see what works best for you.
